Nearly 10 years ago, Charlie Hallowell opened Pizzaiolo, his first attempt at embodying his love of sharing food with others, local politics, and community-building; customers are family. After five years of running Pizzaiolo, Charlie stepped out to open his second restaurant in Oakland, Boot & Shoe Service. Another small neighborhood joint, the Boot is sleeker and more pared down, yet still features seasonal ingredients and food served with love. Penrose, the third of Charlie’s restaurants, opened across the street from the Boot in November of 2013, and focuses on bold North African inspired flavors and wood-fired cooking.
