“Charlie Hallowell made his name putting out masterful California pies at this Temescal favorite, with a wood-burning oven that produces a beautifully spotted crust and excellent local produce on top (try the white potato pie with pancetta and fontina or the tomato pie with housemade sausage and cream). Its sister restaurant Boot & Shoe Service, located on West Grand Ave., is also a winner.”

— “Pizzaiolo: You’ll hear about their pizza, but go for breakfast for espresso and impeccable pastries (and such good toast, topped with honey and ricotta or almond butter or cinnamon-sugar). The space is gloriously romantic at night, but during the day, it feels casual yet motivating—where you want to go to work or meet a friend for coffee.”
Michael Bauer’s list of the top 100 restaurants of 2015 just came out and Pizzaiolo and Boot & Shoe Service are on the list! Bauer says, “For wood-fired pizza in the East Bay — or really anywhere in the Bay Area — Pizzaiolo and Boot & Shoe Service are at the top of the list.”
Thank you Michael and the SF Chronicle for including us and we hope to see you all for brunch, lunch or dinner soon!
On April 9th, Penrose participated in 100OpenTables with OpenTable, where 100 restaurants around the world created a special dining experience for a group of special guests, all on the same night. Penrose was also one of the locations for the video shoot that captured the night.

From a reader: I am looking for a great pizza place in the East Bay/Oakland area. Which is your favorite?
Two places come quickly to mind: Pizziaolo and Boot & Shoe Service, both owned by Charlie Hallowell, who worked many years at Chez Panisse and uses the same keen sensibilities. Both locations have similar menus that go beyond the excellent pizza. Not only do I love the pizza but they have some of the best salads I’ve had, and at Boot & Shoe Service the cocktails are also first rate.
(P.S. He went to Boot & Shoe and wrote me back: “Best pizza since the pizza I had in Naples.”)

Did you catch us on Food Network’s Best. Ever.? They recently chose our potato pizza as one of 11 best pizzas in the country and we have to agree! Check out the show and our potato pizza here:
